Background and History

Illustration and design is everywhere. It is an essential component of communication in our daily lives.

Xyris Illustrative Design presents Ken Mayfield, now in his 16th year of professional art and design in traditional and digital media.

Accomplished in video, multimedia, print, and adult instruction, Ken has created science illustrations and interactives ranging from biology and organic chemistry to astronomy and weather phenomena for the Edmonton Odyssium Science Centre, and handled preproduction planning, storyboards and graphics outlining brain function, cell growth and the Human Genome Project for the Al-Khobar Science and Technology Center.

Recent projects include advisement on User Interface usability, data visualization and interactive screens for the European Environmental Agency, and interactive design for a leading association of epidemiologists.

Past projects include interactive kiosks for the Nova Scotia Sport Heritage Centre, image reconstruction for the St. Mary’s University Psychology Department in Halifax, and netting technology animation and graphics for the Department of Fisheries.

Xyris participated in the New Directions forum at Penn State, and presented with the Geological Survey of Canada at Robson Square to explore collaboration between the sciences and humanities.

Recent collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and the Sustainable Development Research Institute (SDRI) in Vancouver saw production of community-orientated interactives with real-time A/V streaming, e-learning and database connectivity.

Xyris is currently developing proposals integrating A/V, Flash and public science education to produce engaging standalone software and displays.
